About The Studio
The Studio Cheddar is a labour of love, designed to be genuinely luxurious without compromising our environmental goals. Inspired by Scandinavian principles, we focused on essentials: quality materials, natural light, open views, and a peaceful quiet.
Built with care.
Designed for Sustainability.
Constructed in 2021, The Studio Cheddar is a purpose-built architectural space designed with a core focus on sustainability and modern efficiency. The building boasts exceptional thermal performance thanks to its construction with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).
This is coupled with an advanced Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which maintains optimal air quality while minimizing energy loss, ensuring a comfortable environment year-round.
The design also incorporates passive solar principles. Large Velux windows are strategically chosen to maximize passive solar thermal gain during colder months, naturally heating the space and reducing the need for conventional heating.
Furthermore, The Studio significantly minimizes its overall energy demand. Clean electricity is generated via Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels, and surplus power is preserved using battery storage. This system allows the Studio to be almost self-sufficient, substantially reducing reliance on external power.
Finally, the commitment to being eco-friendly influences all choices, extending even to the selection of toiletries and the management of laundry.
What this means in practice is simple: the air inside The Studio is fresh — genuinely fresh, not recycled. The temperature holds without you touching a dial. You sleep well, you feel it in the morning, and you leave knowing your stay was as light on the environment as we could make it.
Your Hosts
Sam grew up in Draycott, trained as an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor, and still knows exactly where to find the best views in the gorge. The Studio reflects what he cares about: thoughtful, locally-rooted, with nothing unnecessary.
Alex grew up in the West Midlands, got bitten by aviation as a teenager, and studied Aerospace Engineering — which is why he's always happy to explain the gliders you'll spot circling above the valley on a still afternoon.
During the pandemic, they decided to invest in something lasting. They brought in local contractors for the structure and finished the interior themselves — every shelf, fitting, and finish chosen with care. Two years of work they're proud of.
They live next door. You'll know them from a wave, not a clipboard. And if you hear chickens — that's just part of the package.
When you book with us directly, you're booking with us — not a platform.
You'll get our best rate, we'll know you're coming, and if anything comes up before your stay, you'll be speaking to Sam or Alex — not a call centre.
