What We Stand For

Built with care.
Designed for Sustainability.

Constructed in 2021, The Studio Cheddar is a purpose-built architectural space designed with a core focus on sustainability and modern efficiency. The building boasts exceptional thermal performance thanks to its construction with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

This is coupled with an advanced Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which maintains optimal air quality while minimizing energy loss, ensuring a comfortable environment year-round.

The design also incorporates passive solar principles. Large Velux windows are strategically chosen to maximize passive solar thermal gain during colder months, naturally heating the space and reducing the need for conventional heating.

Furthermore, The Studio significantly minimizes its overall energy demand. Clean electricity is generated via Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels, and surplus power is preserved using battery storage. This system allows the Studio to be almost self-sufficient, substantially reducing reliance on external power.

Finally, the commitment to being eco-friendly influences all choices, extending even to the selection of toiletries and the management of laundry.

Our Story

Your Hosts

Sam and Alex have resided together in Draycott since 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they made the decision to invest locally by constructing The Studio Cheddar. They engaged local contractors for the structure's shell, undertaking the interior completion themselves, which included turning their hands to many crafts.

Sam is a local resident who spent his formative years exploring the Mendip Hills. As an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor, he has professional experience across Europe and maintains a strong commitment to the outdoors, culinary arts, and environmental sustainability.

Alex was raised in the West Midlands. An enthusiastic aviation devotee, he commenced flying lessons as a teenager and pursued studies in Aerospace Engineering. He is able to offer explanations regarding the gliders frequently observed above The Studio.

Collectively, they share a passion for international travel, discovering gastronomic experiences, a fondness for animals, and spending time in natural environments. The sounds of their chickens may occasionally be audible from the terrace.
